FILM  LONE SURVIVOR   (Watch the official Lone Survivor Trailer in HD)

STARS: Mark Wahlberg, Emile Hirsch, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster

DIRECTOR: Peter Berg

THE LOWDOWN:

Based on the true story of how a hand-picked team of US special SEALS launched a mission to capture or kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah, but unexpected events saw it go horribly wrong. The thrilling battle scenes (which dominate screen-time) are as close to reality as the audience could get without actually being there. The plot is a little too uncomplicated and lacks a little ‘back-story’ depth to get you close to the combatants, but those who enjoy a simple action packed drama with amazing (and very bloody) special effects will love this movie. In true Hollywood sensationalist style, we found some scenes a little exaggerated and toward the climax the relationship between Mark Wahlberg and his Afghan ’saviours’ is pure American Schmaltz, but most followers of the genre will overlook this.

Overall a competently directed, well acted but simple story that portrays the horror and futility of war with a startling reality.
